2021 Summer Creative Coding Expo
The latest and greatest from the “Codeless Crew”. A group of young STEP students. They participated in an advanced summer coding class where they did independent study projects using P5.js. They were given the prompt of “summer”, and were asked to creatively interpret the theme using technology and creativity. Here are their projects! Best to experience them on a laptop or personal computer.
OCEAN CITY
Nehemiah Dabire
I learned about the artist Pablo Picasso, in my school. Mr.Picasso was a renowned artist known for using shapes in cubism. When I learned about Mr.Picasso in my art class, I was inspired by him. His art of cubism inspired me to use the form of shapes in my code. I used squares to create the floor where the boy would walk on. I used triangles for the tails of the fish, and other shapes embedded in my code. I wanted to create a ‘Picasso Summer’ project that reminded people of the influence of shapes.
HIDDEN PARK
Gissel Garcia
I was inspired by Georges Seurat art on a Sunday on la Grande Jatte. I wanted to add new characters and eliminated some characters in George’s painting. This gave me the chance to show different scenarios. I also added bird noises to make it feel more realistic.
SOLSTICE’S AFTERMATH
Emily Valera
“In the Solstice’s Aftermath is inspired by the story of Wendy and her owner from Toy Story. The aim of the game is to surpass obstacles so that the doll can get to her owner! In this segment, the doll must use the umbrella to get the train ticket from the tree.”
WESTERN PARADOX
Mary Valera
“I always liked sharks, so when I heard we had to do a game about summer that was the first thing that came to my head. The characters of this game just came from nowhere I would have no clue how to explain my inspiration. This game’s background was lightly inspired by Club Penguin, one of the best games of my childhood. So, with all that I tried to make a game about summer using my own assets.”
