The Bronx Community College FREE Kids’ Comic Con is back! This is our first live-action event since 2019. For more than three years we have hosted numerous creative and fun online programs focused on keeping art, education, and imagination alive for children and families.  Bringing the wonder of imagination along with the smiles and laughter of children back to campus is a dream long overdue.

On Saturday, September 17, 2022, BCC will host:

KIDS’ COMIC CON SCI-FEST:

A SCIENCE FACT & FICTION EXTRAVAGANZA 10AM – 6PM.

What happens when you combine the artistic and imaginative wonders of illustrated story-telling with the objective and critical thinking of science, math and technology? Many of the world’s most important scientific and technological innovations started with a folkloric yarn or an impossible artistic drawing. Today we marvel at the advances in interplanetary exploration and computer information systems. However we forget that the first designs for human flight came from the imaginative genius of 16th Century men and women such as Leonardo da Vinci or the astronomical mathematic creativity of the ancient Egyptians.

The KIDS’ COMIC CON SCI-FEST: A Science Fact and Fiction Extravaganza celebrates the thin line that often exist between fact and fiction. Over the generations our scientific discoveries have relied on the ability to make our fantasies real. Comic books foster and inspire creative thinking. Our children’s imagination and ability to pre-visualize science and technological innovation decades before their realization is what continually propels humanity forward. When we make art and science equally important in the learning of children we unlock the genius of modern advancement. The goal of KCC is simple; build and support core skills, confidence, and a sense of imagination.

Through the KIDS’ COMIC CON SCI-FEST: A Science Fact and Fiction Extravaganza young people will be inspired to explore and see that both art and the sciences are essential to learning.  This year our line-up of fantastic professional comic book artist offering free workshops will  include; Jamal Y. Ingle, Carla Wiley, ‘The Bearded Man’ Juan Espinosa, Blossom Blair, and many other exceptional talents. In addition displays and presentations will be given that demonstrate how comics have impacted ‘real world’ scientific achievement.  Innovations in robotics, computer science, artificial intelligence, and genetic mutation all are represented in comic books and the multibillion motions picture industry through Marvel Comics and DC Comic films.

The Kids’ Comic Con is dedicated to the film and science contributions of actress Nichelle Nichols who played Communication Officer Uhura (Swahili for Unity) on the original 1966 television series Star Trek. Nichols was one of the first African American women on prime time network television in the United States. In addition to the television show Nichols went on to portray Uhura in six of the Star Trek motion pictures that followed. Nichols was later hired by NASA to advocate for and recruit African Americans and women into the U.S. space program.

Due to the City University of New York COVID 19 policies on vaccination, all participants over age 12 visiting Bronx Community College will have to provide proof of vaccination or have a valid COVID PRC test result within the last seven days.
